A True End of the World Trek

The Dientes de Navarino Trek in southern Chile is considered one of the most remote and least visited hiking routes in Patagonia. Located beyond Puerto Williams, this circuit offers a rare combination of isolation, technical mountain passes, and untouched landscapes that define true expedition-style trekking.

    Itinerary Overview

The Untouched Wilderness of Navarino Island

Beyond its quiet streets, Navarino Island boasts some of the most pristine and untouched ecosystems in South America. Because the famous Cape Horn sits just to the south, the island experiences extreme weather that shapes its dramatic topography. Furthermore, this remote land stands out globally for its unique biological diversity and ancient heritage. Most importantly, Navarino preserves a priceless cultural treasure through the ongoing presence of its ancestral ethnic Yagán people, who expertly adapted to these harsh climates for millennia.

    Pristine Landscapes and Extreme Passes

From the port, the trek unfolds across Navarino Island. You will cross challenging mountain passes such as Australia, Ventarrón, Guerrico, and Virginia. Consequently, each climb reveals expansive views of the Beagle Channel and Cape Horn region. Days are spent hiking through dense lenga forests, remote valleys, and untouched alpine terrain. Ultimately, you will camp in isolated locations far from any crowds.

Setting Sail Into the Wild Blue

Your journey begins with an evening departure into a world framed by watercolor skies and icy seas. This 32-hour navigation connects the regional capital of Magallanes with the rugged capital of the Antarctic Province. As we sail, wild vegetation and marine animals will accompany our vessel through the maze of fjords.

    Stepping Into Yagán History

Eventually, we will dock at Puerto Williams on Navarino Island. This remote area was historically crossed by the nomadic Yagán people. They were an incredible canoeing culture who masterfully adapted to the harsh climatic conditions of the deep south. Today, we trace the edges of their ancestral waters.

    Life on Board the Ferry

You will spend two overnights on the ferry, giving you plenty of time to rest before the trail. Onboard facilities include clean bathrooms and hot showers. Additionally, each traveler will have a personally assigned, comfortable reclining seat. There is also a cozy dining hall aboard which serves three hot meals a day, ensuring you stay warm and well-fed.

Cruising the Hidden Glaciers of Patagonia

Today is widely considered one of the trip’s best-kept secrets. Very few travelers have the unique opportunity to travel slowly and arrive at the island via water. Therefore, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Throughout the day, you will navigate past the breathtaking Cordillera Darwin and Agostini National Park. This route features some of the world’s least-visited glaciers, including the imposing Italy, Romanche, Germany, and France glaciers. Because we travel in this specific direction, we pass them during daylight hours. In contrast, the reverse ferry route passes them entirely in the dark. Enjoy this spectacular sightseeing day to the fullest, because tomorrow morning we arrive at the port very early to begin hiking!

Leaving the Trailhead: Trekking to Cerro Bandera

After arriving at the port and enjoying a hearty breakfast, we will take a private transfer directly to the trailhead. First, our adventure begins with views of the striking Bandera Hill rising out of a dense Lenga forest. Next, we will hike for about an hour along a gravel path until we steadily ascend past the alpine tree line.

As we leave the main path behind, we will curve toward the right to overlook the expansive Robalo Valley. Eventually, our trek leads us to a secluded waterfall where we will set up camp, unwind after our first day on the trail, and enjoy a freshly prepared dinner under the stars.

Highlights: Bandera Hill, Laguna Salto, Beagle channel, Laguna Salto Hike

    Time: 6-7 hours
    Hike Distance: 11 kilometers / 6.8 miles

Today we will leave Laguna Salto and over the Australia Pass (the highest point is 805 m). There are a few complicated parts, but after the pass we will have an easy climb and arrive at Dientes Pass. From Dientes Pass we have a view of the southern part of Nassau Bay, which includes the Winhound and Wollaston Islands; among these islands you can find Cape Horn and the end of the American Continent. After the pass we will descend, cutting to the west and arrive at the Dientes Lagoon and continue along the border of the lagoon to the north where you can see Gabriel Hill. After a few more moments of walking we will arrive at Laguna Escondida. Upon arriving at Laguna Escondida we will set up camp, relax, and have dinner.

Highlights: Views of Cape Horn, Dientes Pass and Australia Pass

    Hike time: 5-6 hours
    Distance: 9 kilometers /5.6 miles

Today we will cross Ventarron and Guerrico Pass, upon crossing you’ll have unbeleivable views of the valley’s many lakes. We will travel through Guerrico Valley until reaching the southern border and arrive at a beaver dam with a view of Clem Hill. Here we will set up camp, enjoy the view, and have dinner.

Highlights: Remote hiking trails, Paso Ventarron, Clem Hill, pristine landscapes

    Hike Time: 5 hours
    Hike Distance: 8 kilometers / 4.9 miles

You will begin the day hiking up towards Virginia Pass. As you climb up you will see Martillo Lagoon and eventually cross over the pass; from the top of the pass you will have an impressive view of Beagle Channel and Ushuaia. After seeing Laguna Martillo, we need to descend on a path to a cliff; the slope is difficult and dangerous. Here we will arrive at the Guanacos Lagoon, where we have dinner and sleep.

Highlights: Spectacular views of the Beagle Channel, Ushuaia, Laguna Martillo & Laguna Guanaco

    Hike Time: 6-7 hours
    Hike Distance: 10 kilometers / 6.2 miles

In the morning we will descend to Virginia Bay to see an abandoned fishery 8km (4.97 miles) from Puerto Williams. We will take a transfer back to Puerto Williams and stay the night in a hotel and have dinner in town.

Highlights: the town of Puerto Williams, views of Beagle Channel, densely wooded forests

    Hike Time: 4-5 hours
    Hike Distance: 9 kilometers / 5.6 miles
